Great Expectations

Department Motto – ‘Great Expectations’ embodies our aim to raise attainment and achievement in Mathematics through ambitious expectations of students. Making students aware of their very high potential, their achievement on a national scale and the prestige of their mathematics grades drives attainment and achievement at all Key Stages and recruitment into Key Stage 5.

The ‘> Curriculum’ (More Than Curriculum) in place in both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 is an opportunity for both students and teachers to look inside and outside the National Curriculum to inspire teaching and learning in Mathematics.

Expect

Engage, Enrich, Extend and Expect – The 4 Es that give direction to how we attain our high standards.

Engaging students by using a variety of teaching and learning techniques, including Thinking Skills, use of ICT including Interactive Whiteborads and interactive activities drawn from the teaching staff’s experience and expertise.

Enriching students by introducing them to mathematics outside of the statutory diet in the National Curriculum. This includes the UKMT Maths Challenges, excursions to conference days and most importantly encouraging staff to enhance their lessons with ‘off curriculum’ mathematics.

Extending students by introducing topics from the next Key Stage, always being aware that we teach in KS3 because students will be doing KS4 and teaching KS4 as if every student were taking AS-level Maths and teaching in KS5 as if every student were studying Mathematics, or a related subject, in Higher Education. Emphasis on the interconnectedness of the curriculum areas both horizontally and vertically.

Expecting both students and staff to attain the very highest grades at all Key Stages and maintain the highest standards of behaviour. Explicit targets set based on potential, but also on aspiration. Both students and staff made aware of these benchmarks and accountable for them.
