e-Mail

eMail - a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients.

All students at the school are allocated an email address when they first join the school. This is provided to facilitate communication between them, their teachers, the school administration and their peers. It is provided to the school, via Sutton LEA from Atomwide.

The URL for SWAN email is http://webmail.suttonlea.org. The schools Acceptable Use Policy covers the use of digital communications including email and these are in conjunction with the Rules put in place by Sutton LEA. These documents can be viewed here: WHSG AUP and Sutton LEA AUP and SWAN Email Use Guidance

SPAM- also known as junk e-mail or unsolicited bulk e-mail (UBE), involves nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by e-mail.
Phishing - a way of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
Scams - an attempt to defraud the recipient of the email, making over inflated claims or offers, preying on the possibility of greed governing a users reaction. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.

Virus's and attachments - eMails can have documents or other media included or attached. As a general rule, unless you trust the sender do not open an attachment. Also look out for odd file names - an attachment may be billed as a funny picture but the file name is picture1.jpg.exe . This means it is an active file and likely carries a virus. A virus is a small piece of software that can propogate itself without intervention and may cause malicious damage to your computer or give control of your computer to a third party.

Simple rules
  1. If you don't know the sender be wary of the email contents and attachments,
  2. IT Support and SuttonLEA will never ask for your username and password.
  3. No reputable bank or other company will ask for your personal details via email.
  4. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
